Description of event
This is the detailed program of the day that includes the above event.
Tuesday - Bread, crops & people
08:00:00 Harvest your breakfast.
Come to the farm, early in the morning, and participate in the collection of the ingredients of your breakfast. Milk the goats, harvest vegetables, collect the eggs from the chickens.
Agrion Terra Farm is surrounded by extensive olive orchards, vineyards and vegetable garden. We will find the goats under an olive tree and milk them; "visit" the chickens and collect fresh eggs; walk through the vegetable garden and harvest vegetables. Or... we will simply follow Stelios and watch his way of doing it!
08:30:00 Breakfast
All breakfast ingredients are home made organic products. Breakfast includes: Bread, cretan rusk, two types of cheese, yoghurt, honey, two types of marmelade, butter, eggs, various vegetables, fresh orange juice, coffee. Coffee is conventionally provided.
Since we are about to knead and bake bread, today we taste various bread and rusks (paximadia) that are made on Crete.
09:00:00 Bread kneading and baking
We prepare the dough and knead it for forming loafs to bake. We put them in the oven and bake them. Just baked warm bread is a unique delicacy!!
Stelios has his own way of making bread baking a wonderful experience. He mixes various kinds of herbs and kneads some loafs especially for us. Kneading the dough is one of the most important steps in bread baking. This step more than any other will determine the outcome of the bread. Stelios will tell us all the tips and warnings for proper kneading. Overcome yeast anxiety forever! Plunge your hands into the dough and see how easy it is to mix and knead bread that is successful every time. Learn how different ingredients affect the outcome of your loaves, and eat your hand-made loaf of the easiest bread you’ll ever bake!
10:30:00 Free time. Midday activity preparation.
It is now time to pack your things and get ready for the midday activity. Get your water bottles, sun glasses, hat... whatever you believe will make your small trip as much comfortable as possible.
11:00:00 People, crops and landscape.
Hiking around the area to meet the crops and the people. We will walk through the landscape and the settlements of our neighbouring area to get acquainted with the living elements of Crete; humans, plants, animals, landscapes.
The People: There is a very good description of Cretan people by the Frankish Bishop of Athens, L.Petit: " They are a truly admirable people who learnt to hold on stubbornly throughout the tumultuous events of forty centuries to their native character and local speech. Courage, mingled with an independent spirit that is often close to downright disobedience, a lively wit, vivid imagination, and a language full of images, spontaneous and unaffected, love for every kind of adventure, an indefatigable urge for freedom, that goes hand in hand with an insatiable desire for bravado... A fertile land that has always given birth to the worthiest of men both in Church and State, in science and letters, in the economy and in war..." (From : "History of Crete", Theoharis Detorakis ISBN 960-220-712-4) ...about the crops and the landscape?... they are there to take most of your senses to the limits!
13:30:00 Free time, or tailor made optional activities.
This is YOUR time! Free to swim, or settle down and get lazy!!! The more active ones will have the opportunity to participate in fascinating excursions which are organised outside the premises of the organic farms, accompanied by experienced professionals. We will be happy to arrange all the details fof you.
Our suggestion for today: A walk through the gorge of Miloi. Miloi (water mills) is an abandoned village inside a small, wooded gorge. There is a small river flowing inside that streams throughout the year. At April and early May there are many wildflowers. In summer you may find many fruit trees planted decades ago and now abandoned. There is a small taverna at the top of the gorge. Vaggelis is there to offer us light lunch. As you walk along the path you will cross a cement bridge. You may go to the right up to an old chapel and then return the same way up to the abandoned village or turn left and go straight to it. Miloi is the best way to have a glimpse on old Cretan architecture. It's amazing how these old houses fit into their surroundings. If you look carefully you will notice the ruins of many watermills, built one under the other for better use of flowing water. The path continues past the village for 30 more minutes, until you reach a dirt road. In order to get back to your car you have to walk all the way back, 2 hours in total. ...or just call for a taxi...! Miloi gorge is an excellent walk to improve your fitness! The professional partners of Agrion Terra can organize this tour for you and join you.
21:00:00 Dinner.
