Spring Program This photo is from the event "Free time, or tailor made optional activities." that takes place on "Tuesday - Bread, crops & people", during one of the programs of Agrion Terra Farm, in Crete. Description of event Our suggestion for today: A walk through the gorge of Miloi. Miloi (water mills) is an abandoned village inside a small, wooded gorge. There is a small river flowing inside that streams throughout the year. At April and early May there are many wildflowers. In summer you may find many fruit trees planted decades ago and now abandoned. There is a small taverna at the top of the gorge. Vaggelis is there to offer us light lunch.
As you walk along the path you will cross a cement bridge. You may go to the right up to an old chapel and then return the same way up to the abandoned village or turn left and go straight to it. Miloi is the best way to have a glimpse on old Cretan architecture. It's amazing how these old houses fit into their surroundings. If you look carefully you will notice the ruins of many watermills, built one under the other for better use of flowing water. The path continues past the village for 30 more minutes, until you reach a dirt road.
In order to get back to your car you have to walk all the way back, 2 hours in total. ...or just call for a taxi...!
Miloi gorge is an excellent walk to improve your fitness!
The professional partners of Agrion Terra can organize this tour for you and join you.

The People: There is a very good description of Cretan people by the Frankish Bishop of Athens, L.Petit:
" They are a truly admirable people who learnt to hold on stubbornly throughout the tumultuous events of forty centuries to their native character and local speech. Courage, mingled with an independent spirit that is often close to downright disobedience, a lively wit, vivid imagination, and a language full of images, spontaneous and unaffected, love for every kind of adventure, an indefatigable urge for freedom, that goes hand in hand with an insatiable desire for bravado... A fertile land that has always given birth to the worthiest of men both in Church and State, in science and letters, in the economy and in war..."
