Description of event
This is the detailed program of the day that includes the above event.
Wednesday - Food preservation & wine
08:00:00 Harvest your breakfast.
Come to the farm, early in the morning, and participate in the collection of the ingredients of your breakfast. Milk the goats, harvest vegetables, collect the eggs from the chickens.
Agrion Terra Farm is surrounded by extensive olive orchards, vineyards and vegetable garden. We will find the goats under an olive tree and milk them; "visit" the chickens and collect fresh eggs; walk through the vegetable garden and harvest vegetables. Or... we will simply follow Stelios and watch his way of doing it! Emphasis is given today in harvesting vegetables that can be preserved in olive oil. We are dealing with this subject after breakfast.
08:30:00 Breakfast
All breakfast ingredients are home made organic products. Breakfast includes: Bread, cretan rusk, two types of cheese, yoghurt, honey, two types of marmelade, butter, eggs, various vegetables, fresh orange juice, coffee. Coffee is conventionally provided.
Traditionally preserved food is the focus of our breakfast today. Sun dried tomatoes, artichokes in olive oil, marmelades... just name it!
09:00:00 Food preservation at home.
We follow Stelios while showing how people in the village preserve their food in olive oil and vinegar. We will harvest various vegetables, wash them, slice them and prepare them to be preserved. How to preserve olives in salt is a local highlight.
10:30:00 Free time. Midday activity preparation.
It is now time to pack your things and get ready for the midday activity. Get your water bottles, sun glasses, hat... whatever you believe will make your small trip as much comfortable as possible.
11:00:00 Trip to midday activity location
It is a trip of about 40 minutes to reach Andreas` winery from Rethymnon.
12:00:00 Wine tasting
The life of Wine. We visit Andreas Dourakis and taste his wine, one of the best on Crete. He will tell us all the small secrets of wine making!! Andreas was a principal winemaker for a major Greek winery, Tzantalis, for 20 years before realizing his dream of opening his own boutique winery in Crete. Andreas’ passion for winemaking shows in every glass we savor. He also creates a superb balance between indigenous grape varieties and more popular international varieties, most of which are organically cultivated. His “wine made by God,” is subliminal but it’s not for sale. We enjoy his wines with meze. The family also makes their own cheese, yogurt, breads and olive oil.
14:00:00 Free time, or tailor made optional activities.
This is YOUR time! Free to swim, or settle down and get lazy!!! The more active ones will have the opportunity to participate in fascinating excursions which are organised outside the premises of the organic farms, accompanied by experienced professionals. We will be happy to arrange all the details fof you.
The time has come to go to Knossos. Either joining Agrion Terra, or on your own, you would not miss a visit to this place. Being there is like moving in time to ancient Crete. Knossos was constructed in about 1900 BC and represents the center of our world’s first culturally advanced civilization. The Minoans were skilled farmers, merchants, exporters and artists, among many more traits that set them apart from neighboring ancient civilizations. Their respect for nature and love of food, wine and the arts is depicted in intricate and whimsical designs on frescoes, walkways and amphorae.
21:00:00 Dinner.
It is time to savour the delights of Crete in a place that we have choosen especially for you. Dinner includes the highlights of the delicacies we have been introduced to during the day. Sorry guys... beverages not included...
Down by the coast, in the area of Missiria, near Rethymnon town, we find Zissis' Taverna. The oldest taverna in town. Renovated recently but serving the same gourmet tastes it did 50 years ago. Highlights: aubergines in the oven, all kinds of greens, ... just name it!
